Before you can start your driving lessons, you need to have a Provisional Driving Licence.
If you don't already have one you will need to apply for one from the DVLA. You can obtain a provisional driving licence application form online (click here) or by visiting your local post office. You can apply for your Provisional Car Driving Licence up to three months before your seventeenth birthday (however, it will not become valid until you are seventeen).
Although you can start your driving lessons as soon as your Provisional Driving Licence becomes valid, you cannot book the driving test until you have passed the theory test. The waiting list for the theory test is usually only a few weeks and you receive your test results on the day of the test.
The waiting time for a driving test is typically about 6 weeks, but this is sometimes shorter.*
* Currently, due to the backlog of tests which were not carried out during lockdowns, the test waiting list for driving tests is around 3 months)
Provided you have a valid Provisional Driving Licence you can start your driving lessons before you take your theory test. The advantage of this is that you are combining your theory study with the early part of your practical driving course. This gives you the added advantage of being able to consult me on various matters relating to the theory test and your theory study. Once you have passed your theory test we will together book your driving test and schedule the remaining part of your driving lessons.
